Abstract
Recently the alcohol consumption and the alcoholics show the increasing tendency in our country and this becomes the serious social problem, thus the measurements for this should be established urgently. Our hospital has realized the significance of the problem and organized a special team for the treatment of alcoholics, through which we systemized and diversified the alcoholics treatment program and has run the alcoholics recovery class since May of 1995.
In this study we focused on analyzing the present status, problems and the reform measure of this alcoholics recovery class. This recovery class aims to treat voluntary patients who have stern motives to quit the alcoholic drinking and involuntary patients who have no motives but signed for the admission of the class with their guardians. In case of the voluntary patients, the recovery course holds 5 days a week during 3 months and one day class lasts for 3 hours with 2 hours of lectures and 1 hour of self-help group meeting. While in case of involuntary patients, the course consist of 3-hour class attendance three times a week and if they transfer to voluntary course they should attend at the regular program that lasts for 3 month.
The peculiarities of this program are in that the program has a meditation course personally conducted by the chief friar and the physical excises conducted by the recreation therapist and it has also the group therapy which is the approach by the cognitive behavior therapy.
The treatment status of the program is as follows :
As of November of 1995 since May of 1995, 25 voluntary patients have been in this alcoholics recovery class and treated and 6 patients of them have completed the 3 months course, while 2 of the 6 patients have been rejected by their families even after the course thus they moved to a Half-way House in In-chon. Meanwhile, 3 among those who completed the 3 months course are abstaining from drinking attending the Alcoholics Anonymous and the Alcoholics Anonymous Message.
The problems of this alcoholics recovery class are in the high percentage of resignation of the patients, 48 percent of the total 25 patients who entered the 3-months class are resigned on the way. And some of the patients who have completed the program are often rejected by their families that they have to go to a kind of Half-way House run by our hospital, which reflects that their families don¡¯t have the abilities of family-therapy and that they need to be educated.
